The first trailer for the A24 musical comedy, Dicks: The Musical, has now been unleashed and offers our first look at Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang, and Megan Thee Stallion in this tale of identity swapping. Released courtesy of A24 (thanks to the movie being one of 39 independent film and TV projects exempted from the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike action), Dicks: The Musical contains a seriously ballsy amount of singing, dancing, and euphemisms. Dicks: The Musical, which for your information was originally titled F***ing Identical Twins until they had to change it for some unknown reason that we’ll probably never figure out, will tell a classic ‘identity switching’ story much like The Parent Trap, with the plot centering on two business adversaries who realize they’re identical twin brothers and decide to switch places to reunite their divorced parents so they all can become an actual family again.
From the producers behind the 2017 musical smash-hit The Greatest Showman and directed by Larry Charles, the director behind Borat and such small screen sitcoms as Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as being a producer on Seinfeld, Dicks: The Musical has been written by stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp.
Dicks: The Musical brings together a stellar cast, including Tony Award winner Nathan Lane (The Producers, Beau Is Afraid), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace, Percy Jackson and the Olympians), Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live, Bros), Grammy Award-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), Aaron Jackson (National Lampoon Radio Hour), and Josh Sharp (Search Party).
Dicks: The Musical Looks Like Another Unique Project From A24
Dicks: The Musical certainly looks to be another unique project from the acclaimed studio A24, and will no doubt hit audiences in the face with melodies and innuendos when it swings into theaters later this year. Dicks: The Musical was recently announced to having its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival in September, with the project set to land at the event alongside the likes of Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl and Dream Scenario starring Nicolas Cage.
But Dicks: The Musical is just the tip of what A24 have in store. Alongside the musical treat, the studio behind such modern day hit movies as Moonlight, Lady Bird, Ex Machina, The Witch, Eighth Grade, Minari, Uncut Gems, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hereditary and more, has plenty on offer throughout 2023.
This year will see A24 release the likes of Priscilla from director Sofia Coppola, which follows Priscilla Presley and her life with Elvis Presley and stars Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley alongside Jacob Elordi as Elvis (October 27); Iron Claw starring Zac Efron, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, and Jeremy Allen White and tells the real-life story of professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich and the Von Erich family (December 22); and Zone of Interest, which centers on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife as they strive to build a dream life next to the camp (8 December).
Dicks: The Musical is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 29, 2023, by A24.
