Having seen the movie, we can now assure readers that no amount of repetitive solar metaphors could do this Aurora justice. It's too powerful for that. The movie concerns itself with the peculiar story of Aurora Mardiganian, a sometime silent film star, and Armenian immigrant. Mardiganian became an international sensation in 1919 with the release of Auction of Souls, an epic biopic in which Mardiganian played herself. The movie became a smash success, and made Mardiganian a household name.

<![CDATA[The Pod Generation Review]]> A busy career woman and her initially reluctant botanist husband have a baby through an artificial, egg-shaped womb in near future New York City. The Pod Generation satirically addresses our dependence on technology, the definition of female empowerment, and humanity's loss of connection to nature. The narrative is presented in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner. There's never any real moments of angst or tension that divides the primary characters. That ends up being a mistake because the film treads into lukewarm territory. You appreciate the philosophical viewpoints, but it comes at the expense of entertainment value.

<![CDATA[Jules Review - Everyone Needs This Alien Bestie]]> Ben Kingsley shines in a heartwarming sci-fi comedy about a truly unusual friendship. Jules is the story of a diminutive, non-verbal alien that crashes into the backyard of a widower with dementia. What could have been a frightening experience develops into a rallying of sorts for lost souls looking for companionship. The elderly become invisible in our hectic modern society that embraces youth. Lonely protagonists find belonging and purpose by caring for an extraterrestrial trying to get home. No spoilers but I almost fell out of my chair laughing at its spaceship's source of fuel.

<![CDATA[Heart of Stone Review - A Goofy Action Picture Ideal for Popcorn Munching]]> With the release of Jaws and Star Wars back in the 1970s, producer Roger Corman lamented that Hollywood had learned his secret. Corman, longtime peddler of drive-in schlock, had made a fortune by producing low-budget genre pictures — exploitation movies, as they would become known. For the record, the term “exploitation” didn’t have a bad connotation in this case. Corman, and those like him, exploited the thirst of the audience with his movies...and occasionally a fading star that needed a paycheck.

<![CDATA[The Last Voyage of the Demeter Review - No Surprises in Lifeless Vampire Flick]]> Hapless sailors become a blood-sucking buffet in a lifeless and predictable vampire horror flick. The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on "The Captain's Log" chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, had the base elements to be terrifying. Getting stuck on a doomed ship at sea with a ravenous beast is a promising premise. There's nowhere to run or hide. Fight for your life or die horribly. What we get is a painfully slow slog through tired genre tropes. The characters don't have an ounce of self-preservation or rationality. They're akin to flailing teens running blindly in the dark with a killer ambling behind them.

<![CDATA[Painkiller Review]]> There are more than a handful of moments when watching Painkiller that it seems obvious this Netflix miniseries is bound to rack up several Emmy nominations. Director Peter Berg’s (Friday Night Lights) directing is on the mark, as is Geofrey Hildrew’s (Once Upon a Time) exceptional editing, making these episodes move along at a lightning speed pace. Showrunners/creators Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster are at the top of their game, and the overall story, which tracks the rise of OxyContin, and the opioid epidemic that followed, has never been timelier.

<![CDATA[Mickey Hardaway Review]]> We live in an era where people are being more than nudged to expand their awareness and explore their internal worlds. That may have been the juicy invitation — or a bit of cosmic paradox — spawned by the pandemic. Whether most people took that invitation to look inward to grow or evolve to some degree is still up for debate.

<![CDATA[Mother Land Review]]> Even before it starts, Park Jae-beom's gorgeous film, Mother Land, has a lot to be proud of. It's the first fully stop-motion animated South Korean film in decades, and even outside of that, these types of films are so rarely seen across the globe. It's not overly long, clocking in at just over an hour, but it manages to accomplish a lot within that timeframe, giving us a grounded story full of heart that's sure to entertain people of all ages.

<![CDATA[Aporia Review]]> If one of your loved ones suddenly passed away in an accident, what would you do? The arts, cinema, and literature have been exploring themes of grief and how it manifests for different individuals for centuries now, showing that it can appear in so many different ways, whether it’s through coping mechanisms or simply cultural differences and mindsets. The core emotion is the same across the world, which is why audiences have continuously enjoyed entertainment that have dwelled on the subject on what it means to go through and get through a loss, especially if it’s a recent one. Fresh from Fantasia 2023, Aporia is another addition to this specific genre of movies, although with a twist.

<![CDATA[Brother Review: A Searing Exploration of a Shattered Bond]]> The sons of a Caribbean immigrant struggle to find belonging and a future while growing up poor on the outskirts of Toronto. Brother is a searingly honest exploration of lives on the edge of uncertainty. The bonds that hold a family together are severely tested as tragedy rattles a strong foundation. Brother, adapted from the award-winning novel by David Chariandy, breathes depth and nuance into absorbing characters. Their love for each other resonates as outside forces pull them apart in a heartbreaking narrative.

<![CDATA[Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Review]]> It’s showtime — literally and figuratively — for season three of Only Murders in the Building. The Emmy-winning series returns to Hulu on Aug. 8 with a whodunit to savor. To be sure, the third season will be remembered as one the show’s best, thanks to a plot that primarily revolves around the death of an actor starring in a theatrical show that Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) is producing.

<![CDATA[Medusa Deluxe Review - One-Take Hairdressing Whodunit Has Style and Substance]]> Forget Agatha Christie, Hercule Poirot, and everything you think you know about murder mysteries. Medusa Deluxe continues the recent resurgence of the genre but doesn't play by the usual rules. From everyone's favorite indie distributors, A24, the new film is written and directed by Thomas Hardiman, with themes that focus on entitlement, hair (unsurprisingly), and community, and filmed to appear as one 90-minute take plus excellent credits.

<![CDATA[The Sacrifice Game Review]]> Horror is back in a big way. <![CDATA[Late Night with the Devil Review]]> There's something comforting in the fact that, despite living in an era where technology exists to make movies look as clean and slick as possible, one of the most popular and enduring subgenres in the horror pantheon is the found footage flick. There's just something about grainy, out of focus, and decidedly frenetic storytelling that pushes all the right buttons, both in terms of creepiness and nostalgia.

<![CDATA[LOLA Review: The Best Found-Footage Film in Many Years]]> The constant conundrum of time travel films can be summarized succinctly — if someone changes the past in any way, then that action will have ripple effects which completely change the future; what happens to the future when you change it out of existence? That's the essential paradox of time travel, and it's just as complicated in a multiverse with free will as it is in one deterministic linear universe. Time travel is thus more complicated than most people think.

What Comes Around will send shivers down the spine of every parent. It's the worst case scenario for anyone worrying about their children's social media interactions. The plot thickens to mud with a bombshell reveal in the second act. My eyes, wide as saucers to that point, started to blink in utter disbelief. The sensational twist is a bridge too far. <![CDATA[Mob Land Review]]> A drag strip racer desperate for cash and his reckless brother-in-law pay the price for robbing a small town pill mill. Mob Land aims to be a gritty crime thriller and social commentary on the ravages of the opiod epidemic. It does neither well in a convoluted plot with an ensemble cast of Hollywood veterans sporting Southern twangs. None of the characters are believable once the premise takes hold. Keystone cops bumble about while bodies fill the morgue. Anyone with a junior detective badge could have solved the initial crime and stopped the bloody aftermath.

The filmmaker, whose previous work includes masterpieces like Hoop Dreams and The Interrupters, weaves together a captivating tale in his latest movie, which transports audiences back into the heart of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s Manhattan Project, singling out the youngest physicist on the Manhattan Project, Ted Hall, the spirited leftist who decided to pass key information about the bomb’s construction to the Soviet Union. <![CDATA[The Passenger Review]]> There is a low-key, somewhat sparse feel to The Passenger, director Carter Smith’s (The Ruins, Midnight Kiss) engaging and thought-provoking hostage thriller. With Blumhouse behind this film, one might expect equal amounts of grit and action. There’s plenty of the former, less of the latter. The script, penned by Jack Stanley (Lou), delivers a major blow in the film’s first 20 minutes, then eases back, becoming a hostage thriller that slowly builds to its final moments, offering plenty of twists in between.

<![CDATA[With Love and a Major Organ Review]]> What starts as a stage-setting metaphor, "My mother used to tell me that her heart was a ball of yarn," soon turns out to be part of the reality in which With Love and a Major Organ is set. This world is much like ours but flattened; everyone wears gray and suppresses any emotion stronger than mild ambivalence. One way in which the two worlds differ strongly, however, is that in this movie, people's hearts are made of individual objects. Moreover, if you try hard enough you can even rip it out of your own chest, so things clearly work a little differently.

<![CDATA[Strange Planet Review]]> When you stop and think about it, our everyday life is pretty weird right? The fact that we celebrate another year of life with our birthdays, the importance of pop culture and celebrities, how we keep what were once wild and dangerous creatures as pets, how we drink the mother's milk from a different species, and even how odd air travel can be. When you think about it, the aspects of our modern life that we have all grown accustomed too are kind of bizarre. That's where Apple TV+ brand-new original series, Strange Planet, comes in to play, exploring the absurdities of our world and our everyday lives.

<![CDATA[Lovely, Dark, and Deep Review]]> Of the several types of conflict in storytelling, 'humanity vs. nature' is both one of the most interesting and one of the most underutilized. Most of these stories devolve into basic survival thrillers and dramas about someone or some group attempting to prevail against the harsh cruelties of nature. We grow increasingly tired and exhausted, it's easier for us to gain weight, and going to the toilet becomes a surprisingly frequent and sometimes difficult endeavor. Thankfully, however, aging happens incredibly slowly, and it takes decades to really feel it. We still have our lives, families, and careers to build, making countless memories and experiencing the joys and sometimes hardships of life, which is what living is all about.

<![CDATA[Mother May I Review]]> Kyle Gallner (Scream, Smile) and Holland Roden (Teen Wolf: The Movie, Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman) work through some major mommy issues in Mother, May I? It' a throwback flick that may or may not be about possession, and leans toward sophisticated psychological horror. Fortunately, writer/director Laurence Vannicelli’s (Porno, The Young Housefly) keeps the plot steady throughout a heady film that asks you to wax psychological as much is it wants to jolt you.

<![CDATA[Fear the Night Review]]> It’s curious to see writer-director Neil LaBute merge into the 2020s with power plays between genders again, first in House of Darkness and now Fear the Night, which hits theaters and digital platforms July 21. Avid filmgoers no doubt appreciated LaBute’s deep dive into the messiness of human emotion and behaviors in films like The Shape of Things and In the Company of Men back in the 1990s. His work after those two great films never felt quite as elevated, however some have been downright engaging nonetheless.

<![CDATA[The Beanie Bubble Review]]> That's one of many great little lines from the new Apple Original, The Beanie Bubble, and it typifies one of the film's main goals — to strip bare the bogus claims of pure meritocracy and lone genius that are so fundamental to inequality, exploitation, and the manipulation of capital. It's a lot to cover in a movie about Beanie Babies.

However, you start to get overwhelmed by the wedding jitters, a very common occurrence during a bride or groom's wedding day, and get cold feet. <![CDATA[Cobweb Review: What A Tangled (and Scary) Web It Weaves]]> Director Samuel Bodin’s new horror film, Cobweb, which hits theaters July 21, offers something distinctly alluring and unique — a mood, a vibe, something eerie you can't shake off, and it occupies every frame of the film. If Bodin was keen on creeping out audiences, he surely has succeeded here. Cobweb is as ethereal as it is bone-chilling fun. It’s scary, too, so feel free to feast on this mid-summer thriller with fervor.

Greta Gerwig's pink-hued film adaptation of the eponymous, billion-selling toy line is a brilliant satire that thoughtfully explores sexual and relationship dynamics. It's also knockdown funny with a whole lot of heart, epic dance numbers, and gleefully torches patriarchal norms. Ryan Gosling steals the show as Barbie's smitten wannabe boyfriend. Ken's machismo-fueled, shredded six-pack antics will have audiences rolling in the aisles. There'll also be a few tears as both characters find fulfillment on their grand journey to self-realization.

<![CDATA[Afire Review: An Intimate New Drama Set Against a Backdrop of Wildfires]]> Wildfires are a serious threat across the world. U.S. states like Oregon and California seem perpetually threatened. And now, a new German-language film from acclaimed writer-director Christian Petzold is based around a growing forest fire out near the Baltic Sea. But this isn't your typical natural disaster movie. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Berlinale, Afire is — above all else — a love story. How refreshing that it doesn't fall into the expected Hollywood norms/clichés of heroism, corny speeches and big-budget action sequences, given the threats of engulfing flames. Here's our take on the more realistic depiction of society's response.

<![CDATA[Final Cut Review: A Hilariously Gross and Heartfelt Delight]]> It isn't often that viewers should be encouraged to stick with a film after 30 terrible minutes, rarer still that a terrible opening is crucial to the success of a film. That's the double-edged sword of the new film, Final Cut (or simply Cut, or Coupé, in French), which begins with a single take that last longer than half an hour. This kind of cinematic pyrotechnics has become beloved in recent films like Birdman or 1917, but in Final Cut, the point is that the "oner" teeters on the edge of failure. It's awkward, poorly choreographed, and confusing.

<![CDATA[Bird Box Barcelona Review: A Deeply Haunting and Compelling Sequel]]> The end of the world is an incredibly terrifying concept. The fact that our very way of living could come to an end in the blink of an eye, is simply haunting. Many of us will struggle if our way of living drastically changes. Living without electricity, and having to provide food and water for ourselves are all things we would never dream of, and a world we are simply petrified to be a part of. Likewise and perhaps most importantly, living in a society with no laws that help keep society in place would be a hellscape to live in. Just take a look at the Purge movies.
