11 Queen Bees (2021)

Ann-Margret and Loretta Devine in Queen Bees
Gravitas Ventures

Queen Bees is a 2021 romantic comedy from director Michael Lembeck that features an ensemble cast of elder actors, including leads Ellen Burstyn and James Caan (in his final film role before his death in July 2022). Queen Bees features Burstyn as a woman named Helen, who reluctantly agrees to move into Pine Grove retirement community at her daughter’s behest. She soon finds herself enveloped by the Queen Bees — a group of residents akin to a high school clique. There she also meets a new resident named Dan, played by Caan, who she begins to have feelings for despite the loyalty to her late husband. The film also stars Loretta Devine, Jane Curtin, Ann-Margret Olsson, and Christopher Lloyd.

Critics gave Queen Bees mixed reviews and the film failed to break even at the box office, but that shouldn’t deter any viewers looking for a sweet and funny love story. Neil Minow of RogerEbert.com labeled Queen Bees the “Mean Golden Girls,” citing director Lembeck’s history working on sitcoms for its well-timed humor. The movie is certainly not a pillar of high brow cinema, but it’s successful at exactly what it claims to be: a lighthearted, easy-to-watch romcom—just aimed at an older demographic. And with the plethora of silly romantic movies made for 20-and 30-somethings, we have a long way to go before our elder cinema catches up.
