Only Murders in the Building has become an unexpected addition to the careers of long-time collaborators Steve Martin and Martin Short. Heading into its third season, the mystery comedy-drama, has now added another big name star to its roster of supporting cast in the form of multi-Academy Award winner Meryl Streep. Revealed in a behind the scenes video shared by co-star Selena Gomez, it is not yet known how big Streep’s involvement in the show will be, but it has certainly got fans excited for the new season’s arrival.

Only Murders in the Building stars Martin, Short and Gomez as three strangers living in an apartment block who come to know each other through their love of listening to true-crime podcasts. The show has won both critical acclaim and a handful of awards to boot. While the plot of season 3 is still under wraps, it certainly looks like the show is continuing its inclusion of big-name guest stars which have previously included Cara Delevingne, Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Sting and Paul Rudd, the latter of which returns for the new season. As you can see from Gomez’s post below, the addition of Meryl Streep is now another step up in the caliber of actors the series has drawn in.

Last year Steve Martin seemed to suggest that he was ready to drop out of Hollywood entirely, and the only thing keeping him there was Only Murders in the Building. While the comedy legend did mention that he was not planning on taking on more roles one the series comes to an end, he later clarified that he would simply not be hunting out new roles, but wouldn’t be stepping out of the limelight entirely. He commented to People:

"It's a little overstated. They asked me, 'Do you think about retirement?' I said, 'Well this is it. I'm doing a television show, I've got a book coming out and I'm touring with [Short]. That kind of is my retirement — that's what it's going to look like.'"

These comments were in addition to previous statements in which he cited his love of his family life as the biggest reason he had stepped away from big movies. He previously explained:

"I have a family life that's really fun. To film a movie now, to go someplace else to live, I'm not willing to do that anymore. I can't disappear for three months. My wife [Anne Stringfield] keeps saying, 'You always say you're going to retire and then you always come up with something.' I'm not really interested in retiring. I'm not. But I would just work a little less. Maybe."

With the new season of Only Murders in the Building clearly well into filming, it could end up airing towards the end of the year considering it is not a heavily special effects driven production. What is clear that the show has certainly found its niche, and fans cannot wait for it to return for another round of comical murder mystery.
