Summary

  • Barbie will be released on Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming platform, Max following its successful box office run.
  • The shorter window between theatrical release and streaming home media is a result of the changing landscape of movie distribution, brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barbie is currently charging towards the $1 billion mark at the box office after just two weeks on release, but Warner Bros. Discovery have already been teasing when the movie will be coming home to stream on Max. Depending on your perspective, the film’s arrival on WBD’s streaming platform might seem like a long way off, or a little too soon, but one thing that is certain is that its debut on Max will be another record-breaker for the movie phenomenon.

WBD held their Q2 earnings call on Thursday, and as well as laying out the current fiscal side of things for shareholders, CEO David Zaslav also spoke about some of the movies that have been top of the company’s list of priorities, which at the moment is being dominated by Mattel’s most famous doll. Zaslav gave a good idea of when Barbie fans will be able to see the movie in their own homes. He said:

“We really believe in the motion picture window. Let this movie go to the motion picture window, play it up, build up that brand, then have it go into PVOD. Take it through these windows of economics that have worked forever, and we think work extremely well. And then put it on Max. And when it goes on Max, we think it’ll have a very good impact and that’ll be in the Fall.”

There is no doubt that Barbie’s streaming arrival will be another boost for the movie that has proven to be the biggest surprise of 2023, and could well end up fighting it out with The Super Mario Bros. Movie to be the highest grossing movie of the year.

Since the Covid pandemic, the length of time between a movie leaving cinemas and heading to home media has become a very fluid thing. While at one point this would have been a lengthy wait of up to a year for a DVD/Blu-ray release, and another year until it arrived on any kind of TV service, that all changed dramatically in 2020 and it isn’t going back to the way it was.

After going through a period of Day & Date releases for some big movies, the reopening of cinemas led to many studios deciding to move forward with a 45-day window between theatrical release and VOD/streaming release date. However, even this has not been set in stone. Movies that have done terrible at the box office dropped on streaming platforms within a few weeks, while big movies have taken much longer to wind their way into the homes of fans.

When it comes to Barbie, a Fall release seems like a long way off, but considering that could be as soon as next month, it is not that far away at all. In a time before streaming, there would have been at least several months between the end of the movie’s theatrical run and fans being able to see it again on home media, so in relative terms, Barbie fans will be getting to bring home their doll very soon. With the film set to continue its money-spinning cinema run, the real question is whether the home release could have been pushed back to even later in the year.
