News has been coming thick and fast about who will be playing the latest iterations of DC’s hero’s in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie that will kick off James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. One of those will be Gunn-movie regular Nathan Fillion, who will be taking on the role of Green Lantern Guy Gardner. While there will now likely be a long period of time before the movie moves on thanks to the dual writer’s and actor’s strikes, that hasn’t stopped one Instagram artist from producing an idea of what Fillion could look like as Gardner – complete with classic comic book bowl cut.

Fillion joins the movie, which will also star David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois respectively. Other characters confirmed for the movie include Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific and Metamorpho, which suggests that Gunn is looking to continue his previous superhero movies by packing it out with plenty of characters from the pages of DC Comics that have previously been ignored. While others will come in time, for now you can get a good idea of what Fillion could look like as the movie’s Green Lantern.

Clements.ink, the Instagram user who shared the image, noted that like many they did not see the casting coming but is on board with Gunn’s casting choices so far. Whether it lives up to the expectations that fans will have by the time the movie is released – currently in 2025 – we can only wait and see but clearly this is going to be much different to other Superman movies of the past.

The DCEU got off to a decent start with Man of Steel capturing the right tone for many fans, particularly those who came to love Henry Cavill as “their” Superman. However, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice Leaguedid not deliver as planned, and the departure of Zack Snyder from the franchise part way through Justice League’s original shoot doomed the following movies of the DCEU to become a disjointed mess of being a connected universe that mostly didn’t connect.

This year has proven to be problematic for the franchise, with expected big hitters such as The Flash failing to even make back its huge budget despite good reviews from many. Before that, both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods were flops by DC standards and the rest of the year is relying on the more obscure Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to prevent 2022/2023 from being a massive loss for Warner Bros. Discovery.

So far, James Gunn’s announcements about which movies and TV shows will be coming as Chapter One of the new rebooted DCU have been well received, and casting choices are being looked on positively. Whether this will convert into huge audience interest in the next few years we will discover in 2025 when Superman: Legacy is released.
