Superman: Legacy promises to delve into the journey of Superman, as he navigates the delicate balance between his extraterrestrial heritage from the planet Krypton and his humble upbringing in the small town of Smallville. The official synopsis paints a picture of a character embodying the virtues of truth, justice, and the American way, relying on human kindness to guide him in a world that often overlooks such qualities as outdated. With this narrative, the film aims to offer audiences a captivating exploration of Superman's personal growth and inner conflicts, as he strives to reconcile the contrasting aspects of his identity and make a lasting impact on the world.
Recently, James Gunn took to BlueSky Social (Via ComicBook) to address a recurring fan request that has followed him from his previous work on Guardians of the Galaxy to his involvement in Superman: Legacy. Fans had persistently expressed their desire for the inclusion of David Bowie's hit song, "Starman," in the upcoming film. Gunn's response, however, revealed that the song would not find its place in Superman: Legacy. The post reads:
"One of the reasons I wouldn't use it (after being asked hundreds of times to use it for the past ten years in Guardians."
Superman: Legacy Introduces New Stars for Clark Kent and Lois Lane
Superman: Legacy has found its leading actors. David Corenswet, known for his performances in Netflix series like The Politician and House of Cards has been cast as Clark Kent. Alongside him, Rachel Brosnahan, acclaimed for her work on the Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, has been chosen to portray the spirited reporter Lois Lane, Clark Kent's love interest. Superman: Legacy will offer a fresh perspective on the superhero without delving into the well-known origin story that fans have come to know. Director James Gunn expressed his intention to explore new adventures and character development rather than going back to familiar ground. While the film may include occasional flashbacks of a young Clark Kent, Gunn emphasized that the origin story will not be the primary focus.
Under Gunn's creative guidance, DC Studios has unveiled a lineup of upcoming projects. From Superman: Legacy to The Authority and The Brave and the Bold, each promises to deliver a fresh take on the characters. Other projects include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, Paradise Lost—a prequel series delving into Wonder Woman's origins—and Creature Commandos, an animated series. Additionally, fans can look forward to a series centered around Amanda Waller, a Green Lantern series titled Lanterns, and a Booster Gold series.
In an interview with the newspaper El País, Gunn emphasized his commitment to offering fresh and interesting narratives that break away from the formulaic patterns often criticized in other superhero franchises. Gunn's approach centers on handpicking directors and writers to infuse the DCU with their unique perspectives and storytelling prowess. By doing so, he aims to create a cinematic universe that captivates audiences and avoids falling into the trap of producing repetitive content that fails to surprise or engage. He said:
“I’m hiring great directors and great writers. It’s going to be interesting stuff, if nothing else. That’s what I’d rather make, stuff that’s interesting and doesn’t work, than stuff that is just the same old thing that we’ve seen again and again.”
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
