Summary

  • Jamie Dornan was once envious of Robert Pattinson's success, but their friendship remained strong.
  • Dornan reflects on his past jealousy, acknowledging that Pattinson achieved success earlier than their group of actor friends.
  • Despite initial envy, Dornan now admires Pattinson, considering him one of the most exciting actors in the industry.

Envy turned to admiration. Heart of Stone star Jamie Dornan rose to prominence thanks to his portrayal of billionaire playboy Christian Grey in the erotic romance Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). Today, the actor is a well-known Hollywood player, but before he and co-star Dakota Johnson heated up rain-soaked Seattle in the Fifty Shades trilogy, Dornan was just another struggling actor. And he was once jealous of his friend Robert Pattinson’s success.

Dornan said in a discussion during Wired's Autocomplete Interviews video series:

"I probably at one point was quite jealous of him like early on. We were all friends back in London, and Rob was just like going places. And we sort of weren't. I think he's the nicest guy in the world."

The “we” Dornan referred to are his group of friends who all started out just trying to make it as struggling actors. However, in 2023, Andrew Garfield, Robert Pattinson, Eddie Redmayne and Charlie Cox have all become valuable commodities on both the big and small screens.

Dornan has reflected on his past jealousy before in a 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight saying, "I think with Rob it's always been like, he sort of had success earlier, so we were a bit like, 'Does he really fit in with us?' Because we were not working and he's working all the time. He did 'Twilight' and was suddenly in a different stratosphere than us."

Following the three films he starred in as Christian Grey, Dornan has worked steadily. The actor has appeared in everything from 2018’s Robin Hood to Trolls World Tour to Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

Jamie Dornan finally made his way in Hollywood. And in his latest project, Heart of Stone, he shares the spotlight with Wonder Woman actress, Gal Gadot. However, back in the day when his pal Robert Pattinson was riding high on the success of playing Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga film franchise, Dornan experienced some jealousy. But it never got in the way of their friendship.

Dornan said in the same sit-down for Wired’s Autocomplete Interviews video series:

"I've known Rob forever. He's a really good friend. I love him. I think he's one of the most investing, exciting actors around."

Dornan went on to become known as Christian Grey, and Pattinson would eventually don the iconic cowl of the Dark Knight in The Batman (2022). Andrew Garfield and Charlie Cox also both ended up portraying superheroes, but their characters came from the pages of Marvel Comics: Spider-Man and Daredevil respectively. And Eddie Redmayne portrays the lead protagonist Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter spin-off film franchise, Fantastic Beasts.

Dornan’s latest film, Heart of Stone, streams on Netflix starting Friday, August 11.
