Alchemy of Souls is a South Korean fantasy drama starring Lee Jae-wook, Jung So-min, Go Youn-jung, and Hwang Min-hyun. It tells the story of four young people who change souls after confronting celestial spirits.
The series is not an adaptation of something else. It uses aspects of magic, fantasy, and a little inspiration from Chinese mythology and alchemy. It is also set in the Joseon era and the plot is set in the fictional country of Daeho.
The drama has two seasons (two parts), and fans are waiting for the third season. However, the production of the third season has not yet been announced, and the timeline is unknown since the actors have announced that they will be involved with other projects. Here are the best moments in the first two seasons of Alchemy of Souls so far.
10 Mu-deok Gets Drunk
This scene is one of the funniest and most transparent scenes in Alchemy of Souls because Mu-deok adopted a completely different facet than usual. She is seen as a strict and straight teacher. But when she gets drunk, she becomes a person who lets out all her insecurities and what she keeps in her heart while showing an uninhibited personality, which makes Jang Uk realize how she feels about him.
9 Jang Uk Gets Jealous
This scene is from the sixth episode of Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow. Here, Bu-yeon expresses to Jang Uk that she thought she was going to marry Seo Yul. Then, she ends up confessing to him that if she had met him first, she wouldn't have run away. But that's not all, as Bu-yeon tells him that she will go to find out more about her true identity with Seo Yul when they go to Danhyanggok.
This ends up turning into a jealous scene, as Jang Uk tells her that if Seo Yul goes with her, it's because of her friendship with him. Things get tense and hint at a little overt declaration of love to Bu Yeon as she expresses that she doesn't want him to be friends with Seo Yul, which was quite pleasing to the audience.
8 Mu-deok Becomes the Winner of the Contest
After Jang Uk had been selected by the Masters to train him as a magician in Alchemy of Souls, there was the uncertainty that Mu-deok had to be separated from the protagonist. So, she would no longer be able to serve him as his follow maid, and they were already trying to devise a plan so that she could be with him.
Thus, the contest to accept new servants is organized, which was an opportunity for Mu-deok. She ends up being shortlisted at every stage of the contest, and everyone was tense during the barrel race. However, with all her might, she managed to overcome the last hurdle and win that position, which was very inspiring and allegorical for the whole audience.
7 Jang Uk Drinks Poison
Jang Uk shocked us in this scene from the moment he was with Nak-su in Mu-deok's body in Jeongjingak. There, the protagonist had to successfully pass the test to be taken as a student. But it wasn't until after he started drinking a strange liquid from a cup that the code words clicked, and he was about to die within minutes.
So, Mu-deok tried to force open Jang Uk's energy gate and ended up undoing Jang Gang's seal. Thus, the poison manages to come out of the protagonist's stomach, and he is saved, which made the audience could relax again.
6 Bu-yeon Mistakes Seo Yul For Her Fiancé
This scene is from the second episode of Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow, and it starts with Bu-yeon looking for Seo Yul with the intention of breaking off their engagement. She hadn't realized that Seo Yul is not her fiancé, which makes it quite a heartwarming scene for the audience.
During the conversation, she tells him that she wouldn't have run away from the wedding had she met him earlier, as she found him attractive. She is relieved when she learns that Seo Yul is not her fiancé as she confesses aloud her assumption that he wouldn't marry her anyway, which he is ultimately amused by in the end.
5 Bu-yeon Proposes to Jang Uk
After Bu-yeon runs away from Jinyowon and cancels her engagement with her already-chosen husband before marriage, she meets Jang Uk. There, Bu-yeon bravely and quite confidently asks Jang Uk to marry her, which was very surprising due to the unexpectedness of the proposal. Thus, Bu-yeon tries to convince him because of her power, looks, and her bad relationship with Jinyowon, which was a mix between hilarious and unbelievable for the viewers.
4 Master Lee Is a Soul Changer
This was another one of the most shocking scenes of the series, as it reveals something that no one would ever believe about this character. First, Master Lee comes to the palace to visit the King, who was very affected by the petrification of the eunuch Kim. Also, it was rather awkward, as the possibility of more soul changers inside the place was not easy to grapple with. In fact, the Gwigu relic was supposed to be the only object that could detect this.
Subsequently, this character says that he could detect other soul changers around. Thus, Hwansu allowed him to change his soul to a younger body while the King learned the whole truth.
3 Mu-deok's True Identity Is Revealed
In this series, characters go through revelations that change everything, and Mu-deok's case is no different. She comes to confess to Jang Uk with tears that her true identity is Jin Bu-yeon, the priestess and most powerful heiress of her clan. She tells him that she is the assassin who harmed the protagonist in the past.
In fact, she also breaks the audience's heart when she cries in front of her real mother, which makes it one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Alchemy of Souls.
2 Jang Uk Comes Back to Life
This was one of the most incredible scenes of the entire series because we witnessed the resurrection of the protagonist. First, he dies at the hands of Mu-deok and his sword, giving way to one of the most heartbreaking moments. His body is cremated and everyone witnesses the funeral act.
Later, Master Lee, who was observing the event, had predicted that the star king could not die that way. The fire was eventually extinguished and Jang Uk emerged unharmed from the flames, which left everyone speechless and proves once again that the magic of this series can do it all.
1 Jang Uk and Mu-deok Kiss
This was one of the most awaited moments of the series, if not the most awaited. Jang Uk finally kisses Mu-deok, after such a long time, this event happens in episode 14 of Season 1, and it is still unsurpassed.
First, Jang Uk starts confessing his love to Mu-deok. She is quite surprised, but even more so when he decides to kiss her passionately, to which she ends up reciprocating as they express their feelings and insecurities in a kiss. This is the best scene Alchemy of Souls has had so far.
