Harry Potter was one of the unluckiest kids in the wizarding world. Nearly always killed at least once a school year, Harry was constantly forced to figure out ways to avoid life-threatening situations. For the most part, he came out unscathed, but that did not make the circumstance better. Harry was still left nearly dying every year since he started attending Hogwarts, and much to his chagrin, he was not alone. Ron and Hermione's lives were always at risk because of the dangerous circumstances they got into trying to stop or defeat Voldemort. Even something as simple as being Harry's friend could get them in trouble in the later installments.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione may have faced some of the most dangerous or life-threatening confrontations, but they were not alone. By the time the Battle of Hogwarts arrived, most of the main characters were getting involved in the war. Whether the danger lay in the professors that surrounded them, the battles they were forced to fight, or the Dementors taking their place on the Hogwarts grounds, there were more than enough dangerous moments throughout the series that had several opportunities to take innocent lives until Harry finally defeated Lord Voldemort.

10 Aragog Chases Harry and Ron

Harry and Ron afraid of Spiders, Chamber of Secrets
Warner Bros.

For as kind and good as Hagrid's intentions may be, he can easily overlook some things. Most of the time, those things tend to be dangerous animals he considers friendly. Aragog may have liked Hagrid, but Hagrid never saw the most dangerous side of Aragog. Since the giant spider had been friendly with Hagrid, Hagrid believed that Aragog would kindly take to Harry and Ron, and since the duo trusted Hagrid, they followed the spiders with minimal questions.

While Aragog did answer their questions, it did not end there, and Aragog allowed his many children to chase Harry and Ron through the Forbidden Forest, offering the two human boys up as a meal. While Ron and Harry were saved by the flying car, they easily could have died that night.

9 Harry's First Confrontation with Voldemort

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Warner Bros. Pictures

Even though Harry's first confrontation with Voldemort technically occurred when he was a baby, the first time the duo come face-to-face at Hogwarts is severely more dangerous. This is the first time Harry can make real memories of confronting the man who had killed his parents, and Harry is the only person standing between Voldemort and the Sorcerer's Stone, which can return Voldemort to a full life.

8 Harry Vs. The Basilisk

Harry defeats the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets
Warner Bros.

Everything about Harry trying to save Ginny in the Chamber of Secrets is dangerous. However, one of the biggest issues he faces is when Tom Riddle sends the giant Basilisk after Harry, and it manages to bite him. Although Harry kills the Basilisk first and destroys Tom Riddle's diary, Harry believes his life will end shortly. Considering the fatality of Basilisk venom, this could have been the end of things for Harry had Fawkes not arrived on time to heal him.

7 Sirius Nearly Dies from Dementors

Gary Oldman as Sirius Black in Prisoner of Azkaban
Warner Bros. Pictures

The entirety of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has the Aurors and government officials wanting to catch Sirius Black after he escapes Azkaban and sentence him to the Dementor's Kiss as a final death. Sirius avoids this fate through most of the story, hiding as a black dog and eventually confronting Peter Pettigrew and revealing the truth to Harry. But Sirius could not avoid the Dementors forever, and it was not even the government officials who were leading the charge. Harry finally makes a full Patronus Charm in a desperate attempt to keep Sirius alive as the hundreds of Dementors tried to steal his last breath.

6 Death Eaters Infiltrate Hogwarts

Draco standing over Harry Potter - Harry's POV
Warner Bros. Pictures

Draco fixing the Vanishing Cabinet is all that needs to happen for Bellatrix and a team of Death Eaters to get within the castle walls. After that, Hogwarts becomes a Death Eater's kingdom, with Snape as Headmaster and the Carrows as the vicious Defense Against The Dark Arts professors. Although most of the Death Eaters being in control happens while Harry, Hermione, and Ron are on the run, Neville's explanation of what they missed is enough to understand the severity of what Hogwarts had transformed into.

5 Voldemort's Resurrection

Voldemort Rebirth in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Warner Bros.

The entire Triwizard Tournament is just preparation for the main event. While each of the three tasks is life-threatening on its own, with revelations that previous competitors had died during the events, none of that is as hard to handle as when Harry and Cedric arrive in the graveyard. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the turning point for the series, as one of the final acts involves Voldemort's resurrection to his full body and announces his official return, at least to Harry.

While the short battle between Harry and Voldemort is certainly dangerous, one of the elements that make it more so is the lack of witnesses. Everyone present for Voldemort's resurrection is either Death Eaters or killed, leaving Harry with a few people who believe him and allowing the rest of the wizarding world to keep the secret or cling desperately to denial.

4 Umbridge's Reign at Hogwarts

harry-potter-hermione-umbridge
Warner Bros.

Dolores Umbridge made a bad impression right from the start. Her personality completely opposed her bright and bubbly pink clothes. She was vile, cruel, and potentially more evil than Voldemort. Umbridge enjoyed bringing pain to the Hogwarts students, and her presence put education and joy in peril. Her power-hungry strive to take control of the school and student body has her stripping everything people love about Hogwarts. She takes the life out of the school, replacing hope and joy with the torture and pain she inflicts on them during detention.

3 The Ministry Battle

Harry vs Voldemort in Order of the Phoenix
Warner Bros.

Harry's decision to rush to the Ministry of Magic to save Sirius ends in a list of catastrophic events for all of his friends. Harmed over and over, Harry watches in horror as Hermione, Ron, Luna, and Ginny are all eventually brought down by Death Eaters, leaving Harry and Neville the last two standing. Harry never meant to lead his friends to a slaughter. While none of them are killed in the mission, it does only get worse when Sirius and the Order of the Phoenix arrive. Sirius is tragically killed, leaving Harry enraged and leaving him briefly fighting with Voldemort for control over his mind.

2 Bellatrix Tortures Hermione

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Harry, Griphook, Dobby, Hermione, and Ron
Warner Bros

The entire time Harry, Ron, and Hermione spend in Malfoy Manor is life-threatening. Although Draco does not confirm Harry's identity, it is only a matter of time before Hermione's curse on his face wears off. In the meantime, Bellatrix tortures Hermione for information, verbally abusing and shouting at her while cutting into Hermione's arm. Downstairs, Harry attempts to figure out how to get free while Ron desperately shouts Hermione's name as they hear her screams. While they are lucky to escape with their lives and with a piece of Bellatrix's hair, being trapped in Death Eater territory was not going to go well for them.

1 The Final Battle

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Ron, Harry, Hermione, and Neville
Warner Bros.

Everyone's lives are at risk, and some are tragically taken during the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry, Hermione, and Ron rush back to Hogwarts to find and destroy a Horcrux. But of course, their timing matches perfectly with Voldemort's arrival, and the war begins. Harry must finally confront Voldemort, and they will ultimately discover which of them will walk away from the fight. Everyone is exhausted by the time Voldemort arrives with what everyone believes is Harry's dead body, only to be elated when he reveals being alive in front of everyone. The Battle of Hogwarts recalls the fights of the past, including the Troll, spiders, and Dementors.
