- Every Movie Coming to Paramount+ in August 2023
Current
After a great month of movies in July, Paramount+ is getting the summer fun this August with more great films. If you're a documentary or music fan, then this is your month, as Paramount+ is looking through the history and impact of mixtapes on the music industry with big-name artists and examining the one night which made Elvis "The King" Presley matter again to Americans and kept his memory and music alive – and some young-adult Asian romance in Taipei for those of you that are into that.
On Aug. 1, we have the premiere of Mixtape, studying the ancient history of the antiquated technology known as the mixtape and its influence on hip-hop and the world of music alongside the likes of DJ Khaled, Mike Tyson, and Lil Wayne. Then on Aug. 10, we will see the premiere of Love in Taipei, where a white-washed Asian girl is thrown into a romantic Asian immersion program. And last but not least, on Aug. 15, Reinventing Elvis: The '68 Comeback shows how Elvis Presley managed to save his career in one night. Here's everything we know about these movies coming to Paramount+ in August 2023.
Mixtape - Aug. 1
Mixtapes used to be as valuable as currency in the streets, signifying that someone was "in the know" about what was going on, keeping the then-experimental genre of hip-hop alive before social media or even the internet could help artists hit it big.
Premiering on Aug. 1 on Paramount+ will be Mixtape, a brand-new documentary that will delve into the history and impact of the mixtape on pop culture, launching hip-hop into the big leagues, refusing to take "no" for an answer, using mixtapes to get the subculture into mainline culture, and how "the beats, the culture, and the hustle changed it all," making hip-hop into what it is today.
Featuring the likes of DJ Khaled, Mike Tyson, Lil Wayne, and many, many more famous artists in a star-studded line-up of exclusive interviews with hip-hop artists and industry figures, Mixtape even has an official soundtrack titled The Def Tape, also set for release at the same time. This is the documentary for both old and new fans of hip-hop about how those old black mixtapes helped to shape the world of music as we know it.
Love in Taipei - Aug. 10
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel Loveboat by Abigail Hing Wen, Love in Taipei will premiere on Paramount+ on Aug. 10, following the young American Ever Wong (Ashley Liao), whose summer takes an unexpected turn when her parents surprise her with a trip to Taipei for a cultural immersion program. She's surprised to see that she doesn't have to do any history or homework but a summer-long free-for-all the locals and other students call the Loveboat.
It quickly lives up to its name when Ever finds herself trying not to fall for two attractive but wildly different boys (Ross Butler and Ricky Hiraga) vying for her attention while at the same time finding the courage to defy her parents’ high expectations and pursue her true passion: dancing.
Reinventing Elvis: The '68 Comeback - Aug. 15
There's been lots of love for The King of Rock 'n' Roll in the movies recently, as Baz Luhrmann's Elvis was a smash hit last year, causing new remasters and old covers of Elvis Presley's music to hit the heights of music charts, staying the top spots for weeks.
Much like most celebrities these days, Elvis Presley's fame soon propelled him into Hollywood, as his name power convinced filmmakers that their movies would succeed if they had such a recognizable name to slap on the posters and cash in on the celebrity's already established fanbase.
And much like most celebrities these days, Elvis soon ended up in many mediocre movies that only hurt his career for every low-quality film he signed on to, like Dwayne Johnson or Nicolas Cage – still household names, but not regarded with as much respect anymore after wearing out their star power.
Arriving on Paramount+ on Aug. 15, very soon after a cinematic release treatment, the brand-new feature-length documentary Reinventing Elvis: The '68 Comeback goes behind the scenes and into the story of the 1968 Comeback Special. In a special blend of past and present, following the director and producer Steve Binder as he works to put together the landmark television event which galvanized audiences into forgiving Elvis Presley after nearly a decade of bad formulaic acting roles which made people forget he was such a great singer before taking part in a long list of B-lister Hollywood movies.
This NBC special made Elvis matter again to Americans, electrifying his career once again, and the documentary based on this raises the bar of cinematic narrative documentaries, showing how Elvis changed the entire course of pop music in one night.
Reinventing Elvis: The '68 Comeback will delight old and new fans of The King, showing how Elvis Presley managed to save his career and his music.
There is all this and more coming to Paramount+ in August 2023.
