- Every TV Series Coming to Paramount+ in August 2023
Current
After a great month of shows in July, Paramount+ keeps the summer fun going with more great shows in August. While a bit light on the quantity, it's heavy on the quality, as we've got some highly-anticipated series this month, including the true stories of real-life CIA special ops missions and fantastic adventures across the universe to strange new worlds.
Continuing from July is the premiere season of the spy thriller Special Ops: Lioness, based on the true story where female CIA agents infiltrate terrorist dens by becoming close to their partners and daughters. Also continuing from July is the second season of the hit series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, where the crew of the USS Enterprise continues to explore the universe and push the boundaries of knowledge and imagination. Here's everything we know about these shows coming to Paramount+ in August 2023.
Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 (Continuing)
The most advertised by Paramount and continuing from last month, from renowned director Taylor Sheridan, best known for his hit Paramount+ cowboy drama series like Yellowstone and 1883 and 1923, with numerous other series in the works, comes Special Ops: Lioness.
Stepping off the ranch and far behind enemy lines, Sheridan adapts the true story of the CIA Lioness missions, where female soldiers Joe and Cruz are tasked with going deep undercover with outside help to befriend the daughter of a suspected terrorist, risking everything in order to prevent the next 9/11, and have to save themselves at the same time.
We're not even through the first half of the premiere season, and Lioness has appeared to be a success to date with viewers as a top-notch spy thriller dealing with dark and gritty ambiguities where two leads have special chemistry for fans to latch onto, though Lioness is a bit less well-reviewed with critics so far as the series has a strong character but a flawed story, being kind of a typical so-so adrenaline-action series with not too much going for it, only showcasing Sheridan's weaknesses as a screen and story writer, falling into tired clichés and patriarchal stereotypes.
Zoe Saldaña (of Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy fame) appears as the lead character alongside a star-studded cast which includes Laysla de Oliveira (known for Needle in a Timestack) as a co-lead, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Michael Kelly, Sam Asghari, all as supporting actors, with Nicole Kidman (House of Cards), and the iconic Morgan Freeman (who needs no introduction) as just some of the big names we see in this series.
Watch Special Ops: Lioness over the next few months and decide for yourself whether it's really worth the hype or not.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 (Continuing)
With no need for advertising and continuing from last month, the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a hit, featuring the return of legendary characters to the iconic franchise like the beloved Captain James T. Kirk and the famous Spock as the USS Enterprise continues to explore the galaxy.
Picking up from the season one finale cliffhanger, the crew of the Enterprise, led by Captain Pike and his trustworthy friend Spock, must disobey Starfleet to save a friend.
A prequel taking place a full decade before The Original Series, Strange New Worlds is bold and innovative, returning the original adventure-of-the-week format in a refreshing return to form that made Star Trek so famous in the first place. This season has received the same praise and love from fans and critics as the previous one, being even more daring, fun, and incredible.
The second season has been going all out, with a crossover with the irreverent fan-favorite animated series Lower Decks and an entire episode being a musical number having been big hits with fans.
Anson Mount plays the lead (leading in Inhumans and appearing in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness), Ethan Peck (most notably from Star Trek: Discovery and Madame Secretary) as the supporting lead, Una Chin Riley, La'an Noonien Singh, all as supporting actors, with Carol Kane (of The Princess Bride fame) and the legendary Andrew Jackson (known for many, many movies and shows) are a few of the many big names we see in this series.
This second season of Strange New World is lining up to be the best Star Trek we've seen in years for both old and new fans, so start catching up while the series continues for the next few months and before the third season eventually makes it to completion next year.
Even though it's not a lot in numbers, some good shows are continuing this month, with all this and more on Paramount+ in August 2023.
