Jackass star Jason "Wee Man" Acuña recently criticized Hugh Grant's casting in the upcoming film, Wonka, in which the English actor play an Oopma Loompa.
Wonka is a prequel movie that sees Timothée Chalamet play the iconic candymaker initially created by Roald Dahl. The film was directed by Paul King and written by King and Simon Farnaby. In addition to Chalamet, the fantasy musical also stars Calah Lane as a girl named Noodle, Olivia Coleman, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Matthew Baynton, Natasha Rothwell, Jim Carter, and Sally Hawkins.
Last month, the first trailer for the upcoming film was released, showing Chalamet portraying a younger version of the iconic character as well as Grant playing an Oompa Loompa. Still, not everyone has been pleased with the casting choice and most recently, while speaking to TMZ, Acuña shared his thoughts on the topic and spoke out against Grant's casting.
Acuña said, "Hugh Grant is now playing an Oompa Loompa, so I guess Hugh Grant, you're now identifying as a little person. Huh, interesting."
Then, when asked about his thoughts on Peter Dinklage's criticism regarding typecasting little people and having them play roles like dwarves, the Jackass responded by saying, "It totally does."
When questioned about how this kind of typecasting impacts the ability to find jobs, Acuña said, "It's not affecting me personally. That's why I didn't speak out about it."
Jason Acuña Isn't the First Person To Call Out Hugh Grant Being Cast as an Oompa Loompa
Acuña isn't the first person to call out the Bridget Jone's Diary star's role in the upcoming Wonka film.
While chatting with BBC, British actor George Coppen spoke out against Grant playing an Oompa Loompa said, "A lot of actors [with dwarfism] feel like we are being pushed out of the industry we love."
The School for Good and Evil actor went on to say, "A lot of people, myself included, argue that dwarfs should be offered everyday roles in dramas and soaps, but we aren't getting offered those roles. One door is being closed but they have forgotten to open the next one."
Coppen also called out Grant's appearance in the Wonka trailer. The Artemis Fowl actor stated, "They've enlarged his head so his head looks bigger. [I thought] what the hell have you done to him?"
At the end of the first Wonka trailer, Chalamet's Wonka speaks to Grant's character, while the latter in trapped inside a glass jar. Wonka states, "So you're the funny little man who's been following me?"
Grant's character then replies, "I will have you know that I am a perfectly respectful size for an Oompa Loompa."
Last month, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director of Wonka stated that he had specific reasons for casting Grant as an Oompa Loompa. At the time, King told THR, "So I was really just thinking about that character; somebody who could be a real s***, and then – ah! Hugh! Because he's the funniest, most sarcastic s*** I've ever met."
Wonka releases later this year, on December 15th.
