Marvel Studios conflict with their VFX artists is taking a step further, with the workers voting to unionize due to the terrible working conditions at the studio, which have recently come to light.

While SAG-AFTRA and WGA continue striking against the big Hollywood studios and streaming companies, something that has happened for the first time in 60 years, a new union of workers from the cinematic industry is forming.

Disney is one of the most affected companies, since most of its long-awaited productions like Deadpool 3 had to pause because of the strikes, and it seems like things won't be getting easier for the House of Mouse. A new report from Vulture reveals that VFX artists working at Marvel Studios have voted to unionize, after many complaints have been presented regarding the working conditions at the studio, especially during the pandemic and right after it.

In the article the outlet states that more than 50 employees filed a petition to be represented by International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), an organization that protects workers in different artistic fields, being the first group of visual effects professionals to do this.

Here's the official statement from Mark Patch, VFX organizer for IATSE:

“For almost half a century, workers in the visual-effects industry have been denied the same protections and benefits their coworkers and crewmates have relied upon since the beginning of the Hollywood film industry. This is a historic first step for VFX workers coming together with a collective voice demanding respect for what we do.”

Earlier this year, Vulture published another piece with testimonies of some VFX artists at Marvel Studios shading light at some of the conflicts that were going on between the workers and the company, sharing details of the extreme working conditions they were suffering from at the studio. And it wasn't the first time it happened.

In 2022, another VFX artist, who decided to remain anonymous, spoke with the same outlet about the pressure some workers went through while working on MCU projects:

"Maybe a month or two before a movie comes out, Marvel will have us change the entire third act. It has really tight turnaround times. So yeah, it’s just not a great situation all around. Some of the problems I mentioned are universal to every show and every project. But you end up doing less overtime on other shows. You end up being able to push back more on the directors. When they say something like, 'Hey, I want this,' you can be like, 'This doesn’t make sense.' Not every client has the bullying power of Marvel."

In the last couple of years, Marvel Studios productions like Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania or She-Hulk have received heavy criticism because of faulty visual effects, and it was responding to that negative comments that the artists decided to come out and explain what was happening behind the cameras.
