The Pod Generation satirically addresses our dependence on technology, the definition of female empowerment, and humanity's loss of connection to nature. The narrative is presented in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner. There's never any real moments of angst or tension that divides the primary characters. That ends up being a mistake because the film treads into lukewarm territory. You appreciate the philosophical viewpoints, but it comes at the expense of entertainment value.

<![CDATA[Jules Review - Everyone Needs This Alien Bestie]]> Ben Kingsley shines in a heartwarming sci-fi comedy about a truly unusual friendship. Jules is the story of a diminutive, non-verbal alien that crashes into the backyard of a widower with dementia. What could have been a frightening experience develops into a rallying of sorts for lost souls looking for companionship. The elderly become invisible in our hectic modern society that embraces youth. Lonely protagonists find belonging and purpose by caring for an extraterrestrial trying to get home. No spoilers but I almost fell out of my chair laughing at its spaceship's source of fuel.

<![CDATA[Best Sci-Fi Movies on Max to Watch Right Now]]> In the streaming wars, it's hard to find a service that's still reliable in regard to genre films. Excessive original content and franchises have rendered the biggest names generic when viewers try to find something of value, and some of them aren't that extensive in content. After HBO evolved to Max, we were afraid the change was going to have a negative effect on what titles they offered in the past.

<![CDATA[Best Sci-Fi Movies with a Low-Budget, Ranked]]> Science fiction movies are expected to have a high budget with all the special effects and demanding production setups. However, history has proven that even high-budget films do not guarantee a blockbuster performance. One such example was Disney's biggest box office bomb, the animated movie Mars Needs Moms, which had a budget of $150 million yet only raked in $39.5 million in sales. Meanwhile, one good example of a box office hit with a low budget is the original installment of the horror film Paranormal Activity. This 2007 movie had a budget of $15,000 but earned more than $193 million.

<![CDATA[Underrated Sci-Fi Movies of the '90s, Ranked]]> When Hollywood transitioned from the '80s to the '90s, technology was a huge participant when the rules were changed. Suddenly, horror wasn't as important as "looking good" in science fiction, and plots tended to be put aside for the sake of a better "look and feel." In budgets, changes were oriented towards special effects and finding at least a big name that could elevate a genre film into something more mainstream.

The constant wave of remake announcements makes fans wonder if it's even possible to make something better than what some already consider to be the best films ever made. The most successful remakes are of films that have strong stories and timely themes but were marred by either poor direction, studio politics, or any one of the million potential problems that can plague a production.

<![CDATA[The Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 1960s, Ranked]]> When it comes to science fiction cinema, it’s generally thought that the 1970s or 1980s were the decades in which the genre really took off, so to speak. We may be partial to the '70s, with its Star Wars and its Alien. Or we may fawn over the '80s with films like Blade Runner, The Terminator, and so much more. But both of these decades owe something to the more modest, unassuming sci-fi of the ‘60s.

These new advanced technologies made a way to create never before seen worlds. However, it was not just the big-budget blockbusters that benefited, as cheaper cameras and effects allowed creatives of all sorts the opportunity to make the kinds of films that were unthinkable even a decade or two ago. The result was a panoply of great low-budget sci-fi films this year, many of which stood above the bigger CGI productions.

<![CDATA[Most Realistic Alien Invasion Movies of All Time]]> In the past few years, there has been a lot of discussion about so-called UFOs being shot down in North American airspace; they're probably spy balloons or normal detritus, but conspiracies have run rampant. Admittedly, before Star Wars, science-fiction films were for more of a niche audience. Much of the genre was simply not taken seriously before George Lucas came around, and great genre films like The Blob and Godzilla did not receive as much love from the Academy Awards, being dismissed as B-movies by critics and cinephiles (until they received intellectual reappraisals over recent decades which explored their brilliance, with Godzilla now referred to as poetry).

<![CDATA[8 Canceled Sci-Fi Movies That Will Never See the Light of Day]]> Science fiction is a genre in cinema that is often the most challenging for many reasons. It requires arguably the most creative imagination because it must incorporate enough of the fantasy element to immerse and mystify the audience, and still carefully balance that with enough realism to make the premise and every aspect within it believable. After all, science is merely the man-made study of that which we understand about our planet and the infinite void of space around it, and our planet is so little. The creative possibilities are themselves infinite, but we the audience still must be able to envision it based on what we understand.

<![CDATA[Donnie Darko: Why the Sci-Fi Film Still Holds Up After 20 Years]]> Oftentimes, science fiction flicks don’t age well. There are a number of reasons for this. For one, when plot lines are set in the not-so-distant future, the technology ages out. Other reasons include new facts being uncovered about metaphysical realms that make things like time travel, and alternate dimensions seem impossible, or at the very least, highly improbable. Donnie Darko, on the other hand, lives in that sweet spot between reality and the unknown, is set in the past (the late 1980s to be precise), and treads the line between reality, perception of reality, relationships crossing through tangent universes, and just the right amount of high school angst.

<![CDATA[The Most Disturbing Scenes in Sci-Fi Movies, Ranked]]> Science fiction blends many subgenres together that it's almost impossible to separate them or tell them apart. Speculation dictates a number of ideas compounding and challenging each other to the point of enlightenment. One big thing or many small things, science fiction paints a picture that either predicts or prevents the future. Illustrations have an aura that feels familiar yet foreign, like the fantastic worlds of Frank Frazetta or H.R. Giger. Images of what could be, the current path of change, the euphoric utopia, or the vapid dystopia all subject our attention to asking and answering questions.

She has avoided downloading her dreams onto the new digital software and saved them on over 2000 VHS tapes viewed by Preble throughout the film. However, explaining the film's introduction doesn't do much. It is less about the plot than it is about the experience.

<![CDATA[8 Restaurants in Sci-Fi Movies We Want To Try]]> Science fiction is a genre of speculation and imagination. A wonder of the stars begets the want of space travel. Manual labor was made more efficient with the inception of machines. Before, the computer was reserved for scientists in a laboratory. Now, there's a computer in every home and pant's pocket. Compound devices and multitasking tools have simplified life's daily tasks. For any problem, there is a solution not yet invented. When reality is humdrum, science fiction plays with the possibilities, tests the theories, cements the laws, fashions worlds uncharted. Covering new ground, moving towards the future, which seems uncertain, while being informed by the past and present, which is certain, gives an optimistic comfort and awareness. Of the places one can go, there exists some familiarity with each step taken. Steps are soon replaced with tastes, a cultural palate for ideas exchanged over a good meal in some of the finest (strangest) restaurants the known universe has to offer.

<![CDATA[The Most Far-Fetched Stories in Sci-Fi Movies, Ranked]]> Science fiction has an unusual dichotomy. Hard science fiction is based in reality and concrete facts, while soft science fiction lends itself to the fantastic and impossible. The genre takes us to subterranean depths and stratospheric heights. Somewhere in between is a middling subgenre, a speculative fiction that borrows established laws and returns what-could-be theories. Science fiction that makes you think about the big questions. Heady material on a cinematic scale is engaging on both a visual and philosophical front. Films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, and Soylent Green presented social commentary on how the world works and how the world harms itself. Although science fiction opens our minds to new ideas in the long run, there are still some sci-fi flicks that get lost in the details.

<![CDATA[Exclusive: The Cast of The Ark on the Sci-Fi Show's Characters and Secrets]]> Adding the words "... in space" to the end of any title creates immediate sci-fi imagery that's usually pretty interesting, if easy. It's a good descriptive tool for recommending and reviewing certain shows and films. For the new original Syfy series The Ark, one can imagine The West Wing in space — a group of people, stranded in space, try and make important democratic decisions for the crew, all while walking and talking in a very Aaron Sorkin way. Or perhaps one could think of J.J. Abrams' Lost in space (no pun intended) — after a breach of the hull, a group of people try to survive while maintaining the artifice of their secrets.

<![CDATA[The Ark Review: Syfy Spaceship Drama Navigates an Enticing Mystery]]> Astronomer and all-around multi-hyphenate Carl Sagan only published one full work of fiction in his life, but Contact was nonetheless a treasure trove of fascinating, deeply meaningful sentiments, everywhere as beautiful as his popular science manifesto, Cosmos. “The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space," wrote Sagan. “For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.” Perhaps those two sentiments, simultaneously optimistic and melancholic, accurately describe the feeling of journeying through space.

<![CDATA[Why Strange Days Is One of the Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies of the '90s]]> There are many ways to "play it safe" when it comes to making a sci-fi film. Aliens. The end of the world. Robots that are a little too human. Humans that are a little too robotic. In 1993 or 2023, these are all timeless enterprises bound to entertain a commercial audience, even if the movie ends up being no Blade Runner. Surprisingly, sometimes it seems that the one thing not so timeless to sci-fi is the future. Y2K films can feel pretty outdated and cheesy, when that date has indeed since passed us, and the world has not ended.

It has some exhilarating action sequences while also containing nearly one linear hour without any action at all. <![CDATA[The Best Sci-Fi Movies Based on Books, Ranked]]> Long before there were science fiction films, there was science fiction literature. In fact, many of the greatest science fiction movies that we celebrate today are inspired by or based on novels written years before the films were even dreamed of. From the iconic stories of H. G. Wells, to the pulp and dime-novel yarns of little-known science fiction writers of the '50s and '60s, the film industry is always on the hunt for the next book or short story to adapt into a major blockbuster. Sometimes the novel is immensely popular and a dedicated fanbase hotly anticipates the adaptation, as was the case with Dune, and other times the film version takes audiences by surprise and introduces a generation to a once-forgotten work of fiction. In either case, we see that literature and cinema are very closely intertwined.
