Romance films are a hit for countless reasons. Some viewers simply enjoy the guilty pleasure of watching fictional relationships unfold, even if the characters aren't actually compatible. Others just enjoy seeing complex relationships that either work through trial and error, or descend into a tragic romance by the end of the film. Nevertheless, it's almost expected that a romance film will include marriage in its narrative... whether the marriage will last isn't a given. Here are 10 romance movie marriages that probably ended in divorce.

10 Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) - Holly and Paul

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Paul Tells Holly in the Library He Loves Her - Audrey Hepburn
Paramount Pictures

Breakfast at Tiffany's is a classic for a reason; it's a delightful adaptation of the Truman Capote novella that glamorizes an otherwise unhealthy romance between Holly Golightly and Paul Varjak; Holly trivializes Paul's feelings, she is emotionally unavailable, and Paul, for most of the film, enables her narcissistic tendencies.

While Paul proves himself a reliable friend to Holly that provides unrequited love through her countless trials, Holly simply goes along for the ride. In the words of Holly Golightly herself, she refuses to be locked up in a cage. Chances are, Holly would have grown tired of Paul sooner than later.

9 Sex and the City (2008) - Big and Carrie

Carrie and Mr. Big Sex and the City
HBO

This relationship has been problematic through and through. Carrie and Big bring out the worst tendencies in each other; Big has been unfaithful to his previous partners by having sexual encounters with Carrie; Carrie often pressures Big into committing to her, when the truth of the matter is, he doesn't want to remarry; and they are both self-serving in their relationship. There is no way this relationship would have lasted past the two-decade-mark had Big not met his untimely end in And Just Like That.

8 No Strings Attached (2011) - Emma And Adam

Well, this one is a no-brainer. Simply put, Emma and Adam are a terrible match, mostly because Emma refused to take Adam seriously for the majority of the film. In Emma's defense, she does make it clear that she doesn't want a relationship with Adam past casual sex. Nevertheless, she trivializes his feelings and acts erratically more often than not. Adam deserves much, much better by the end of No Strings Attached.

7 Love Actually (2003) - Juliet and Peter

Love Actually
Universal Pictures
Bac Films

Love Actually is, for the most part, that feel-good romance movie audiences tune into, but there's a certain love triangle that stands out from the lot--Juliet, Peter, and Mark. To be fair, Mark does instigate the events that unfold between him and Juliet when he confesses his love for her. Juliet and Peter's marriage would have never worked out due to Juliet's fickle-hearted nature and the fact that Mark and Peter were best friends. Granted... with friends like Mark... who needs enemies?

6 Runaway Bride (1999) - Maggie And Ike

Runaway Bride
Paramount Pictures

Marriage was probably not in the cards for Maggie, as she left several grooms at the altar due to her persistent case of cold feet. Maggie seemed her happiest when she took the time to discover herself, and probably needed some more time devoted to exploring personal interests and hobbies before tying the knot with Ike. Their marriage seemed abrupt and like a pandering to formulaic, wedding finales in rom-coms over a realistic outcome for Maggie's character.

5 Monster-In-Law (2005) - Charlie And Kevin

Monster-in-Law TV Show Coming from Carrie Diaries Producer
Warner Bros. Pictures

This one doesn't really need much explanation. While Charlie and Kevin are a functional couple that respects each other, Kevin's mother is their biggest obstacle; Viola is the mother-in-law from hell! Viola's sheer presence in their lives would have eventually led to Charlie and Kevin going their separate ways. It's surprising they even made it to the altar in the first place.

4 Gone with the Wind (1939) - Scarlett And Rhett

Gone with the Wind
Everett Collection

Arguably the most complicated couple on the list, Rhett and Scarlett aren't even compatible as friends, let alone husband and wife. They spend most of the film antagonizing each other, trivializing each other's feelings, and causing problems for everyone around them. Rhett abandoning Scarlett was a long overdue decision, but the most realistic outcome.

3 A Star Is Born (2018) - Ally and Jackson

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born
Warner Bros. Pictures

Unlike many others on this list, Ally and Jackson did actually love each other, but Jackson's addiction soon became their biggest obstacle. While Jackson helps Ally jumpstart her music career, her hard work soon pays off, while Jackson's career only declines due to his vices. Jackson eventually takes his life when he realizes the pain he's caused Ally, but this marriage was bound for divorce regardless of Jackson's outcome.

2 Gone Girl (2014) - Nicholas and Amy

Gone Girl
20th Century Studios

Gone Girl gives audiences one of the most monstrous marriages ever between Nicholas and Amy. They emotionally abuse each other, manipulate each other, and Amy fakes her own death to sabotage Nicholas by making him a prime murder suspect. Of course, Amy is slightly worse because she's a murderer! In all seriousness, these two would have ended divorced if not destroying each other first.

1 Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) - Christian and Anastasia

When discussing the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, one can only think, control issues, control issues, control issues! Christian and Anastasia are bad news from the start, mostly because Christian has serious, unaddressed issues. Christian showers Anastasia with gifts, lavish vacations, and an overall elevated style of living, but these benefits are not reason enough for Anastasia to even contemplate a friendship with Christian, who in turn neglects Anastasia's emotional needs, her personal boundaries, and individuality.

There is a lack of respect between these two characters that would have undoubtedly resulted in their divorce, even if Fifty Shades Freed tries to sell the notion that they are meant for each other.
