<![CDATA[The Pod Generation Review]]> A busy career woman and her initially reluctant botanist husband have a baby through an artificial, egg-shaped womb in near future New York City. The Pod Generation satirically addresses our dependence on technology, the definition of female empowerment, and humanity's loss of connection to nature. The narrative is presented in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner. There's never any real moments of angst or tension that divides the primary characters. That ends up being a mistake because the film treads into lukewarm territory. You appreciate the philosophical viewpoints, but it comes at the expense of entertainment value.

<![CDATA[Jules Review - Everyone Needs This Alien Bestie]]> Ben Kingsley shines in a heartwarming sci-fi comedy about a truly unusual friendship. Jules is the story of a diminutive, non-verbal alien that crashes into the backyard of a widower with dementia. What could have been a frightening experience develops into a rallying of sorts for lost souls looking for companionship. The elderly become invisible in our hectic modern society that embraces youth. Lonely protagonists find belonging and purpose by caring for an extraterrestrial trying to get home. No spoilers but I almost fell out of my chair laughing at its spaceship's source of fuel.

Dark TV comedy has become ever more dominant in the televisual landscape, but its increased presence has also come with a bevy of mediocre-to-downright-bad series. Dark comedy is an art form, and one often difficult to capture in a serialized television show (especially one with censors). Not only must the show have a darker/more serious main plot line, but it must also toe that line and manage to not take itself too seriously so that the show can be funny for viewers as well. It should be mocking in certain ways which intelligently sheds light on the issues it parodies.

<![CDATA[Final Cut Review: A Hilariously Gross and Heartfelt Delight]]> It isn't often that viewers should be encouraged to stick with a film after 30 terrible minutes, rarer still that a terrible opening is crucial to the success of a film. That's the double-edged sword of the new film, Final Cut (or simply Cut, or Coupé, in French), which begins with a single take that last longer than half an hour. This kind of cinematic pyrotechnics has become beloved in recent films like Birdman or 1917, but in Final Cut, the point is that the "oner" teeters on the edge of failure. It's awkward, poorly choreographed, and confusing.

<![CDATA[Adam Devine Explains How Superhero Movies Ruined Comedies]]> They don't make comedies like they used to, nor do they make nearly as many of them, and Adam Devine is thinking that's a direct result of the immense success of superhero movies. In a new interview with Theo Von to promote the Netflix action-comedy film The Out-Laws, Devine lamented how the comedy genre has become considerably less popular and profitable in recent years. The Workaholics star shares his belief that the rising budgets on superhero films wound up leaving filmgoers with the choice of watching something that's like a visual spectacle compared to a classic, simple comedy movie. Movie tickets cost the same either way, and as they aren't getting any cheaper, some people may pick the higher-budget film to feel like they got their money's worth.

<![CDATA[Most Anticipated Comedies of 2023, Ranked]]> Laughter has been called the best medicine for many years, all the way back to the Biblical Book of Proverbs in 17:22, which reads, "A joyful heart is a good medicine." Through traumatic times, moments of despair, and overwhelming confusion, a good laugh might be the distraction people need. Furthermore, these periods of amusement can provide anything from much-needed solace to a necessary epiphany about the obstacles in their lives. The chaotic energy that rose to the surface in 2020 shows no sign of going anywhere. While people have coped using public discourse, difficult conversations in the community, or even complete isolation, the relief provided by comedy can either offer a vacation to escapist fantasies or combat the sources of discord head-on with a jovial tone and hilarious dialogue.
